What it costs

For most users it’s pennies per scan (depends on image size and OpenAI’s current rates). If you only scan occasionally, your OpenAI usage may be a couple dollars a month — sometimes less.

Monthly is great for occasional use. Annual is best if you list often or source regularly. Look, we get it. I built this tool for my wife when she started her vintage Ebay business. Money was tight. Time was a precious commodity. She’d spend hours pouring over databases scattered all over the web, trying to suss out which artisan was associated with what mark. It was a time sink. 🔍 What does “Bring Your Own AI” mean?

You add your own OpenAI API key to your account. Maker’s Mark Identifier uses that key to run image analysis. Your key is used only for your requests.

🔍 Why do I need my own OpenAI API key?

If we didn’t structure the service this way, we’d have to charge more to cover the costs of power users and that hurts small operators and people who are just starting out. We didn’t want to do that, because we’ve been there. This is the fairest pricing we can offer, because everybody pays for their own AI use, and we charge a small fee for the workflow and ongoing development of the tool itself.

Your key is stored securely in your account and used only to process your requests. Other users cannot see it. We don’t reuse or share it.

🔍 Does it work offline?

No it does not. As a web-based service, you need an internet connection to access it.

🔍 How accurate is it?

Results include a confidence score so you can judge how strong the match is. Some marks are clear; some are ambiguous or poorly documented. This tool is designed to give you better information, faster — not to “guess perfectly” every time.
